Two Staged Readings
Directed by Alan Barkan

ONE NIGHT ONLY - Pay What You Can - suggested donation $5 - $8
Actors Ensemble of Berkeley is pleased to present a staged reading of two previously unproduced plays by Murray Shisgal, the author of the award-winning film "Tootsie", starring Dustin Hoffman. THE HYSTERICAL MYSOGYNIST details a crisis in the relationship between a somewhat-successful playwright, his best friend, and his second wife, Ellen, who accuses him of never writing a play with a sympathetic woman character - and being a dog lover to boot!. REGRETS is about the trials and tribulations of painters and their muses as they approach middle age.
Directed by Alan Barkan, who previously directed "Barefoot in the Park" by Neil Simon, and Shisgal's own "Luv", both for Actors Ensemble of Berkeley on the Live Oak stage. Join us for the fun (and the kvetching!).

Alan Barkan (George Bernard Shaw) Alan directed Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park and Murray Shisgall’s LUV for Actors Ensemble of Berkeley at Live Oak Theatre, and has also acted as producer, stage manager, and/or graphic designer for a number of our productions. Most recently he directed a staged reading of “Short Works Referencing Shakespeare” for us in the summer of 2010. Alan moved back to the Bay Area from the East Coast, like many of us, to realize his dreams, which include producing live theatre, and lounging on the beach with a bevy of lovelies. Fortunately for us he has been able to realize at least a few of his dreams.
Morgan Brown (Phil/Daniel) Morgan’s less than secret identity is as a grad student in Math at U.C. Berkeley – currently he is in the process of applying for teaching jobs J. He has also acted in a few of our staged readings and ran lights for us for Blithe Spirit last year.
Lisa Wang (Ellen) performed with the AeofB earlier this year in Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play, where she played the role of Queen Elizabeth, Hitler, and Ronald Reagan. In addition to seeing her with AEofB, you can catch Lisa performing in and around SF with her improvised theatre group, The Streetlight People. the streetlightpeople.com
Phil Reed (Bromberg) is new to this stage, but a regular at Contra Costa Civic Theatre. Memorable roles there include Saunders in "Lend Me A Tenor", Mr. Jaggers in "Great Expectations", Peter Quince in "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Chaplain De Stogumber in "Saint Joan", and Ruckley in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Further afield, he has appeared as Cleante in “Tartuffe” at Masquers Playhouse, and Doc in "West Side Story" at Alameda Civic Light Opera.
Pat Parker (Marta) last appeared at AE 30 years ago! Since then she has acted at Aurora, Magic, Center Rep, California Conservatory, Diablo Actors' Ensemble, Contra Costa Civic, Altarena, and Chanticleers. She has also done staged readings at Subterranean Shakespeare, Ross Valley, and San Francisco Playwrights Center
