Request for Proposals
Staged Readings for Winter 2020
Theme: "2020 Vision"

Actors Ensemble requests proposals from DIRECTORS interested in directing a staged reading (which may in the future be turned into a main stage production) during our Winter 2020 Staged Reading Series, to be produced in conjunction with our main stage production of "She Kills Monsters" at LaVal's Subterranean Theatre in Berkeley.  The reading slots available are in the evenings of Monday, January 20th and Monday, January 27th, 2020.

Proposals will be accepted until midnight November 10th, 2019 and should be directed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  The winning proposals will be selected by mid-November, with auditions to occur in early December.  Each reading will be afforded two rehearsals, on the Tuesday and Sunday nights preceding the reading, e.g. January 14th and 19th for the January 20th reading, and January 21st and 26th for the January 27th reading.  Directors will participate in the auditions, the rehearsals, and the productions, and will be provided a stipend of $100.  Actors Ensemble will pay for any necessary rights and/or scripts for the chosen production.   A successful proposal may also lead to a main stage production in the future.

Proposals should address the general theme:

2020 VISION - addressing the future in an age of uncertainty.  Plays may address the future in a holistic, personal, or societal level, even how one might approach life from the standpoint of someone in their 20's versus the viewpoint of an older person.

Actors Ensemble, Berkeley's only true community theatre, is the longest-running theatrical organization in Berkeley.  We are dedicated to producing quality theatre with an emphasis on the ensemble, and favor plays with large casts featuring a variety of roles.  We welcome diversity both in our casts, direction, and backstage personnel.  We are a 501 3(c) organization, since 1957.

We encourage plays which feature a (largish) ensemble.  We regularly cast cross-gender/race/age/persuasion.  Plays which require obtaining performance rights should include some information about how to obtain them and how much they cost, though that is usually not an issue.  Please also include information about schedule availability for the Director in question.

We ENCOURAGE new and emerging directors, and persons of all genders, persuasions, and colors, and ages to apply.

Proposals should be submitted to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. on or before midnight PDT, November 10th, 2019.

Proposals should include:

*play title and playwright
*play synopsis
*publisher, if any, how to obtain rights, and cost information.
*length of play -- not over 2 hours and one acts are fine
*director's availability during December and January of 2019.
*director's resume and best way to contact
*how the play connects to our staged reading theme
