Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion, is still fiercely debated over forty years later. In this incisive play, acclaimed writer Lisa Loomer cuts through the headlines and rhetoric to reveal the divergent personal journeys of lawyer Sarah Weddington and plaintiff Norma McCorvey ("Jane Roe") in the years following the fateful decision. In turns shocking, humorous, and poignant, ROE reflects the polarization in America today while illuminating the heart and passion each side has for its cause.
Auditions are Sunday, May 22nd, at Playground Playspace, 3286 Adeline St., Berkeley, CA 94703, from 5 to 7 pm, though, if necessary, we can accomodate someone a bit before or a bit after that time. The audition space is a short walk from the Ashby BART station. Please bring paper copies of your headshot and resume. No monologue necessary, be prepared to read from sides provided. We will schedule folks in groups of 2-3 in 10-minute blocks. If you wish to audition together we encourage you to sign up together.
This production is being put together rather quickly in response to current events. If you cannot make the auditions but otherwise are available to perform, please write us and we may be able to make alternate arrangements. We anticipate one Zoom-based read-thru and two in-person rehearsals, one the week of May 30th and one in the week leading up to the first performance - we will finalize rehearsal times as part of the casting process. Various parts are available, but we are especially looking for actors capable of playing roles ages 20-40. All genders, gender-expressions, ages, ethnicities, and colors are welcome to audition. Actors Ensemble regularly casts cross-gender and cross-type. All actors cast will receive a small stipend.
